Tim Krabbe is a Dutch journalist and novelist by profession, but first and foremost a chess lover looking at the game with an unusual eye. He is quite famous for collecting chess curiosities, meaning unusual chess positions, lost variations and little known combinations. One might ask how useful such curiosities are in their preparation? They for sure make you think twice before moving something obvious with blindspeed, as well as it makes you appreciate more the enormous number of possibilities chess offers.
The above position is from a lesser known game collected by Tim: Barendregt - Sliwa, Marianske Lazne 1961, game featured in one of his chess articles at Chesscafe a few years back. Your tasks:
a) Analyse the position and decides who stays better (10 points)
b) White to move and win as soon as possible (10 points)
Total available points for this puzzle is 20. The answers will be published next week together with puzzle #63.
Puzzle #61 solution:
This proved to be a tough nut to crack. Still Karl was the fastest and most methodical solver.
a) See solution
b)The connection between this puzzle and the battle of Posada is that in the solution there is the strategy of luring the enemy into a confined space and then taking them down. The Black King in this puzzle had no place to move, (or sometimes just a small space) so a check will win the game for White.
