After our last week salute to Knights, let's focus this time on precision. You cannot win a game without precise calculation, when the moves have to fit together like delicate pieces of a Swiss watch. The key at all times is to find the right idea and not to be deceived by the number of moves needed to transform the right idea into a real solution on the chessboard. Here is the simple question:

Puzzle #50 solution:
Probably the mountains of snow outside, not seen in Vancouver for about 40 years, have occupied most of your time; only 6 of you have responded to this puzzle. Joanne gave it a couple of tries without much success, but everyone else found at least one solution. Thank you very much for your efforts! I bet Santa saw this and brought you some nice gifts under the tree. The solution is a nice combination of answers:

This puzzle really is a salute to Knights. Both Queen promotions fail to 1. ... Kxf6 when there is no mate in three. But who says you have to promote a pawn to a Queen?
