These days three BC boys are facing the best juniors in the World at the World Youth Chess Championship from Vietnam. One of them is our good friend Jonah who started the tournament with a promising win in game 1: LEE, Jonah (CAN) - TURKO, Arsenijs (LAT) 1-0, WYCC 2008, round 1
After 44 moves they reached the following endgame position (see diagram). Jonah is up a pawn and has a huge majority on the King side; on top of it Bishops are of the same colour. Questions:
a) Explain how you will win this game and provide the best line you can think of (5 points)
b) See how the game continued
b1) Could black play better? Explain (5 points)
b2) Point the wrong moves played and give a short explanation for each one of them (5 points)
Total available points for this puzzle is 15. The answers will be published next week together with puzzle #43.
Puzzle #41 solution:
a) The aparent overwhelming advantage Black has would not be enough for a win. White is down only 1 point since "g7" is worth as much as "Ra8". The key is to keep all pawns together so they could cooperate to force the draw.
b) See solution:
