The saying "still waters run deep" is a very appropriate description for this position. Now it is your opportunity to show how much you understand out of it (how deep you can go). Your tasks:
a) Is it an opening or middle game position? Explain your answer
b) Is there a direct threat on the board now? Which one?
c) Who stands better and why?
d) White to move - show the best line you can think of (no longer than 3-5 moves)
Total available points for this puzzle is 25. The answers will be published next week together with puzzle #242.
Puzzle #240 solution:
Firdusi (manuscript), 1500. I got a few very good answers. It is surprising how many missed naming the "double attack". This week's best answer is by Coco:
a) Black is using the King to attack Rf4 and a Rook to mate on a1. Black is doing a double attack and threatening to at least win a Rook.
b) White should try to stop Black's plan and do something unexpected to worry Black. White should also try to make a trick like double attacking back. white should do this because then it can be up material and win the game.
c) Solution:
