Here we are near the end of another school year at the club. It has been a long journey for all of us and most of you have become better players. There is no greater pleasure for a teacher than seeing his students succeed! I am going to close this year with an unusual but logical puzzle; all you have to do is:
a) Going from the starting position reach the present one by using only legal moves
Total available points for this puzzle is 10. The answers will be published next week together with puzzle #171.
Puzzle #169 solution:
Lisitzin, puzzle #613. Most of you did not know when to stop adding moves to the solution. This is the reason only two of you got maximum points. We are going to work on this type of endgames next year as well; it is way too important to let it slip from your memory. James had one of the correct answers; here it is:
a) Material: The material is even. King Activity: Both Kings are close to the side. Centre: White's pawn is controlling it and Black's pawn is in the centre. This is a King pawn endgame. Since the Kings are close together, Black can play the opposition against White. To keep Black pawn safe, Black King should approach the White King and stop it moving to third rank on the Queen side. Then, when White King is forced to move away from its pawn, Black King can capture the pawn and promote its own to win the game.
b) See solution:
